Seminole Community College’s Women’s Golfers finish third at Nationals

SANFORD, Fla.Seminole Community College’s women’s golf team finished
third at the National Junior College Athletic Association's (NJCAA)
National Championship on Thursday, May 21.

All four Raiders finished in the top 20, with Suzanne Ervin leading the
team, finishing fourth overall with a score of 75 (38-37). Rio Milord
was ninth with a score of 77 (39-38-77), Fabys Barreto 17th and Eva
Rogers 20th.

SCC’s overall score was 313, 16 points from first-place Redlands
Community College
and a shot behind rival Daytona State College.

Due to heavy rains, the national tournament, originally set to tie-off
on Monday, was moved to Providence Golf Club near Orlando. Due to time
constraints, the tournament was scaled back to one round. The 18-hole,
winner-take-all round began Thursday at 10:30 a.m.

“We hadn’t seen the course, but we knew anything could happen,” said
Christa Teno, SCC’s women's golf coach. “It was an incredible six hours.”

With only four players competing, SCC was at a disadvantage because all
the players’ scores counted. The team stepped up, Teno added.

This was SCC’s first year competing as a team and only the second year
of the program at the College.

Last year, Ervin, a sophomore from Schertz, Texas, and Milord, a
sophomore from Delray Beach, competed individually, finishing tied for
10th.

Fifteen teams and more than 100 golfers from around the nation competed
in the NJCAA event.
